Naqvi took the silverware and medals to his hotel room after India refused to accept trophy from him.
The Asia Cup 2025 concluded with controversy as Team India refused to receive their winners' trophy and medallions from ACC and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi.
Furious with India’s stance, Naqvi took the silverware and medals to his hotel room. After BCCI’s protest, the PCB boss has reportedly said that if India wants the trophy and medals, skipper Suryakumar Yadav can collect them from his ACC office in Dubai. However, the Indian board has reportedly denied this condition.
Speaking to India Today, former India cricketer Madan Lal has slammed Naqvi's antics in the final, saying that it didn't look good for the fans and on live TV.
"All these things should not have happened. When players lift that trophy in front of the fans, or on live TV, that is when it looks good," Lal stated.
"Mohsin Naqvi has no knowledge of the sport. How a sport should be played, how one should behave. There were so many people from the Indian team who were standing on the dais afterwards. He should have told someone else to give the trophy to the Indian team. The PCB chief has destroyed his and his country's reputation," he added.
Reacting to Naqvi's demand that Suryakumar should come to the ACC office to receive the trophy, the 1983 World Cup winner said, "Why should Suryakumar Yadav go to the Asian Cricket Council office to collect the trophy? India won, you should have let them celebrate with the trophy on the ground. But of course, he does not have any knowledge, in their country everything is decided by the armed forces."
The presentation ceremony began after an extended delay, during which only individual award winners were recognised. Despite India's refusal to accept the trophy from him, Mohsin Naqvi remained on stage, and the silverware was never handed over.
Suryakumar Yadav-led side was prepared to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, who was also present on the dais, but Naqvi did not allow this.
In the post-match presser, India skipper Suryakumar addressed the trophy controversy, saying: "This is one thing which I have never seen since I have started playing cricket, since I have started following cricket, that a champion team is denied a trophy. That too a hard-earned one, it's not like we got it easily. It was a hard-earned tournament. We were here since the 4th, played two back-to-back good games. I feel we deserved it. I can't say anything more, I think I have summed it up really well, I can't say anything more about it."
He went on to add, "If you tell me about the trophies, my trophies are sitting in the dressing room, all the 14 guys, all the support staff - those are the real trophies who I have been a big fan of throughout this journey of the Asia Cup. Those are the real trophies, the real moments which I am taking back as lovely memories and which will stay forever."
