After failing to receive clarification on when India will receive the Asia Cup trophy and the player medals they earned after defeating Pakistan in the final on Sunday, BCCI leaders Ashish Shelar and Rajeev Shukla left the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting on Wednesday in anger.
According to those in the know, Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the ACC and the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), was questioned about this matter by Indian officials, but he was unable to provide them with an adequate response.
“Shelar informed members that the BCCI secretary, Devajit Sakia, has already written to ACC about the same, but there has been no response. The BCCI wants the trophy and medals to be delivered to ACC’s office in Dubai, from where the Indian board will get them collected. However, Shelar didn’t get a positive response for the same. So, Shelar and Shukla decided to quit the meeting, marking their protest,” a top BCCI official told Indian Express.
He also went on to add that Naqvi, in his opening speech, didn’t extend his congratulations to the Indian officials for winning the title.
The Indian team had declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi during the final post-match presentation, and Naqvi had refused to comply with India's request. In response, Naqvi left the stage in anger, taking the Asia Cup trophy and medals with him. The Indian team celebrated their win without the Asia Cup trophy.
In addition to calling Naqvi's actions during the presentation ceremony "childish and unacceptable," the BCCI intends to start a campaign to have him removed from his position as president of the ACC, which alternates between the member boards every two years.
“Naqvi cannot take the trophy to his hotel. Now Naqvi’s days in the ACC are numbered, and he will soon be shown the door. The BCCI will launch a campaign to remove Naqvi. We will raise this issue seriously at the ICC meeting in November. Such a person should not be allowed a place in the top institutions of international cricket,” BCCI sources told Dainik Jagran.
Mohsin Naqvi had become the ACC president in April 2025, after Jay Shah stepped down to assume the office as ICC president in December 2024. Former Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva had briefly served as ACC president in an interim capacity.
