Explosive India opener Abhishek Sharma is in line for his maiden ODI call-up as well, as reports have stated that BCCI selectors might include him in the Indian squad for the ODI series as well for the Australia tour, apart from the T20Is.
India is set to play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is in Australia in October-November this year, and the BCCI is reportedly keen to start building for the 2027 ICC World Cup. The ODI series will start on October 19.
According to the Times of India, the devastating southpaw has impressed the men in charge with his performances in the shortest format, and the management may probably call him up for an ODI.
The 25-year-old Punjab batter is the leading run scorer in the present Asia Cup. Abhishek has 173 runs in four games, but the most impressive statistic is his scorching 208.43 strike rate on the sluggish Dubai pitch.
Abhishek has also been observed bowling for hours in the nets, making him an ideal candidate for Gautam Gambhir's setup. His List A record is equally impressive. In 61 matches, he has amassed 2014 runs at an average of 35.33 and a strike rate of 99.21. He has also picked up 38 wickets with his left-arm spin.
Additionally, Abhishek Sharma’s brilliant 74 in 39 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes against Pakistan convinced the BCCI decision-makers of his ability to thrive under intense pressure. He was unfazed by the opposition and situation and took every challenge head-on.
However, it remains to be seen who makes way for Abhishek Sharma to occupy the opening slot in the Indian team. Before the next ODI World Cup, which will be held by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October-November 2027, India will play 27 ODIs.
