Australian fast bowler James Pattinson has been ruled out of the upcoming New Year's Test match in Sydney against India due to a rib injury. A replacement has not been named at the moment and he will be observed ahead of the fourth and final Test scheduled to start on 15 January.

Pattinson was a back-up seamer with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Test no.1 Pat Cummins leading the bowling attack against India. However, with this injury, the minimum of chances of any of those getting rested at Sydney is now out of question.

Coming to the injury suffered by Pattinson, he was at his property back in Melbourne after the rest of the team moved to Sydney for the third Test. He had a fall in his apartment and injured his ribs. He won't be back to full fitness by Thursday, January 7 and will not be available for the Sydney Test.

Cricket Australia said, "Pattinson injured his ribs in a fall at his property while on approved leave from the Melbourne (coronavirus) hub following the Boxing Day Test. He will not be replaced in the squad at this time and will be assessed further leading into the Brisbane Test match.

The Australian squad consists of two other back-up seamers in Sean Abbott and Michael Neser who can come into the playing XI if any of the fast bowlers gets unavailable due to any reason.
