India defeated Australia by 8 wickets in the Boxing day Test at MCG.
At the close of play on Day 3, the hosts were 133/6 in the second innings, leading India by 2 runs. However, the visitors bowled brilliantly in the first session on Day 4 to bundle out Australia for 200.
Mohammad Siraj claimed three wickets for India while Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two scalps each.
Chasing the target of 70 in the fourth innings, India lost Mayank Agarwal (5) and Cheteshwar Pujara (3) cheaply but debutant Shubman Gill (35 not out) and stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane (27 not out) stayed there till the end to guide the tourists over the line.
Soon after the win, India’s regular skipper Virat Kohli took to Twitter and wrote: “What a win this is, absolutely amazing effort by the whole team. Couldn't be happier for the boys and specially Jinks who led the team to victory amazingly. Onwards and upwards from here.”
Notably, Kohli left the Australian shores after the Test series opener in Adelaide for the birth of his first child.
India had suffered a humiliating 8-wicket defeat in the opening Test. With this victory, they levelled the series 1-1, with two Tests still to be played in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
