AUS v IND 2020-21: "Wasn't expecting a phone call from the selectors", Shaun Marsh on comeback chances

Marsh last played a Test match for Australia back in January 2019.

With David Warner and Will Pucovski ruled out, there were murmurs that Shaun Marsh might be recalled by Australia for the first Test against India in Adelaide. But the left-hander aged 37 says he was never buying into the hype and not "expecting a phone call" to come his way from the selectors.

Marsh last played a Test match for his country back in January 2019 and averages a disappointing 34.31 after 38 games in an unfulfilled career. As an opener, though, the record is slightly better as it also features a hundred in Colombo in difficult conditions.

Marsh has also had a fantastic start to the first-class season for Western Australia, making three centuries in six innings. But he didn't think there was any recall in store for him.

"There were certainly no phone calls," Marsh was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. "I probably wasn't expecting one either, to be honest. There were a few funny videos being thrown around. I got a few from a few of my mates back home, which were quite funny."

"But there were certainly no phone calls from anyone. I'm purely focused on playing well down here for the [Melbourne] Renegades [in the BBL]."

Though not officially retired, Marsh conceded his days as an international cricketer are now over.

"I think so, yeah," he said. "I'm 37 now. I haven't played for a few years in Test cricket. As I said, I wasn't expecting a phone call and I'm pretty comfortable with where I'm at.

"[I'm] trying to play as well as I can for the Renegades for the next six weeks and getting back to WA after that and finishing off the Shield season. I guess that's where it's at for me at the moment."

Marsh has also played 15 T20Is and 73 ODIs, the last of which came at the 2019 World Cup where an untimely injury had ruled him out midway.
