WPL 2024: Ex-RCB owner Vijay Mallya congratulates Smriti Mandhana-led side on becoming champions

Delhi Capitals suffered their second straight defeat in final of WPL.

Vijay Mallya, the former owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL franchise, congratulated the RCB Women’s team on winning the WPL 2024 tournament. RCB defeated Delhi Capitals in the final on March 17, 2024, in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley stadium.

DC had opted to bat first and thanks to Shafali Verma’s 44 and Meg Lanning’s 23, their 64-run opening wicket partnership posted 113 runs in 18.3 overs. The RCB team’s spinners Shreyanka Patil (4/12), Sophie Molineux (3/20), and Asha Sobhana (2/14) picked 9 wickets to fall, while Radha Yadav was run out.

In response, Smriti Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32), and Ellyse Perry (35*) took the RCB team to the win in the final over. RCB won the final with 8 wickets in hand finishing on 115/2 in 19.3 overs. This made RCB the WPL 2024 champions and handed DC their second consecutive defeat in the final.

Meanwhile, Vijay Mallya, who once owned the RCB franchise in the IPL, took to X to congratulate the RCB women’s team on their WPL win.

He posted: “Heartiest congratulations to the RCB Women’s Team for winning the WPL. It would be a fantastic double if the RCB Men’s Team won the IPL which is long overdue. Good Luck.”
