WPL has been a tournament featuring five teams since its inception.
Since its first season in 2023, the WPL has been made up of five franchises. Saikia stated that the board would look into ways of growing the competition and enhancing other elements of the league, which has developed into a significant platform for women's cricket.
Talking to the official WPL website during Wednesday's auction, Saikia noted that the BCCI would have to weigh the options before settling on how to proceed.
"From next year, definitely we will have to do some brainstorming sessions to increase the number of teams as well as in other areas where we can improve," Saikia said during the WPL 2027 auction.
He went on to say that any review would reach past the players to take in the broader ecosystem behind the competition, such as coaches, selectors, and the other stakeholders connected to the league.
Saikia stated that in its four years, the WPL has advanced considerably and has grown into a major force within the women's game. The tournament has given Indian players the chance to compete next to top international cricketers while also offering emerging talent a platform on which to display their abilities.
"WPL is one of the big leagues in franchise cricket after the IPL. We have come a long way in four years, and ultimately, we are now dominating women's cricket. WPL has contributed to the success of women's cricket in India," he said.
An expansion of the WPL has the potential to increase domestic players' chances of securing contracts and getting an opportunity to rub shoulders and learn from international cricketers. Yet the BCCI has yet to reveal any specific plan or schedule for introducing new franchises, and Saikia's remarks suggest that talks will get underway next year.
