Shardul Thakur’s dismissal was one of the highlights of the first ODI.
During the 18th over of India’s run chase, Shardul dabbed one fast leg-spinner from Yannic Cariah straight into the hands of Alick Athanaze at second slip.
Soon after the catch was taken, the Indian all-rounder gestured to the umpire that he was not ready to face the delivery. However, he had to walk back to the pavilion after scoring 1 off 4 balls.
Speaking to Jio Cinema, Shardul opened up on his dismissal in the series opener, saying that he was caught off guard since the sight-screen changed when the bowler was delivering the ball.
“The sight-screen changed when he was bowling. So, I got confused and suddenly I played the ball out of nowhere. So, I just went and spoke to the umpire. But they said, ‘you should have moved away. Once it’s out, we cannot do anything’. I said okay,” he stated.
Shardul also spoke about the injuries he had to deal with over the last few years.
“Injuries are part and parcel of the game. Sometimes they do come when you are not expecting it. That’s one sad part of it, but it is okay. You have to take it in your stride and keep moving forward,” he added.
Commenting on the pitch in the opening ODI, Thakur said, “It was a little damp in the first game. There was enough help in the pitch where bowlers could extract something out of it. Later on, when the spinners came in, we saw the spinners getting some purchase.”
Shardul Thakur picked up the wicket of Brandon King and conceded 14 runs in the three overs he bowled during India’s five-wicket victory in the first ODI.
