21-year-old opener Yashasvi Jaiswal ruled the roost on day two of the ongoing first Test between West Indies and India being played at Windsor Park, in Dominica as he became only the third Indian opener to hit a century on his Test debut.

Resuming his knock on 40* on day two, Jaiswal reached the fifty-tun milestone in 104 balls. He had to be extra cautious given that the West Indies spinners got spin and bounce on the slow, low pitch at Roseau.

He added 229 runs for the first wicket with captain Rohit Sharma, who himself scored 103 runs before being dismissed. Rohit’s dismissal was followed by that of Shubman Gill for 6 runs. But Jaiswal continued and hit a brilliant hundred, on his Test debut in 215 balls.

But Jaiswal was stoic at the other end and got support from legend Virat Kohli as the two batted throughout the remainder of the sessions as India finished day two on 312/2 with Jaiswal on 143* and Kohli on 36*.

With a century in his maiden Test, the left-hander became the 17th Indian to achieve this feat and has a chance to break Shikhar Dhawan’s record for the highest score by an Indian on debut- 187.

After the end of the day’s play, Jaiswal received a standing ovation from his teammates and coaching staff, once he entered the dressing room.

Ravindra Jadeja and Ishan Kishan hugged the young opener whilst Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma patted him on the back to appreciate his marathon performance.
