Cheteshwar Pujara played 103 Tests for India from 2010 to 2023.
Cheteshwar Pujara, one of the best batters in Test cricket for the Indian team, announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket on Sunday, August 24, 2025. He had made his India Test debut in 2010 against Australia and played his last Test in the 2023 World Test Championship final at the Oval, also against Australia.
The Rajkot-born batter, who is renowned for his unwavering focus and traditional approach, played the majority of his career at number three in the batting order, where he was expected to anchor innings and frequently endure extreme pressure.
Despite the unavoidable comparisons to Rahul Dravid, his predecessor in the position, Pujara made a name for himself with tenacity and a series of game-changing heroics, especially when playing abroad.
Pujara made 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, including 19 centuries across 103 matches. His highest score was 206*, and he finished as India's eighth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket.
"Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field—it's impossible to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. Thank you for all the love and support,” Pujara wrote in a heartfelt social media post.
He was part of India’s dominance in Test cricket in the late 2010s and also played a huge part in India’s first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018-19, scoring three centuries and becoming Player of the Series.
As he bid goodbye to all forms of Indian cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara received huge tributes from the Indian cricket fraternity on social media, praising him for his outstanding India and domestic cricket career.
