Sourav Ganguly has been associated with the Delhi Capitals franchise in IPL and WPL.
Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India, has expressed interest in coaching the country. Ganguly stated in an interview with news agency PTI that he did not have time for the position in the past, but that if given the opportunity, he would be interested in coaching the national team.
After completing his term as president of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), the former president has ventured into coaching. He has served as a mentor to both the men's and women's teams of the Delhi Capitals.
The Delhi Capitals advanced to the Women's Premier League final under his coaching; however, they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians.
"I never really thought about it (coaching the Indian team) because I got into different roles. I finished in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) President. We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50, so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes," Ganguly told PTI in the interview.
In addition, Ganguly was requested to evaluate Gautam Gambhir's time with the Indian team. Thus far, Gambhir's experience with the Indian team has been erratic. Despite winning the 2025 Champions Trophy, India has utterly failed in Test cricket while being coached by Gambhir.
Ganguly made the same point, stating that Gambhir will learn on the job just like everyone else.
"He is doing a good job. He started a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand. But he picked up with the Champions Trophy, and this England series is going to be a big one for him. I have not seen him that close. But he is very passionate. I have not seen the strategy closely because I have never worked with him. I have played with him, and he was a great guy when we played together. He had a lot of respect for me and the seniors.
I see him now. He is very passionate. He is very straightforward. He is open about everything, and he says things — people, team, players. And from the outside, it feels like he is a very straightforward person. You get what you see. I wish him all the best. But just like everyone, he will also learn and grow," concluded Ganguly.
