Considered to be one of the most complete batters in cricket, Sachin Tendulkar is celebrating his huge milestone 52nd birthday today on April 24, 2025.
The legend was born in 1973 in Mumbai to Marathi author Ramesh Tendulkar and Rajni and started as a teen prodigy, making his Test debut in 1989 at the age of 16. He proved his talent was no joke as he went on to establish himself as the best batter of his generation.
He carried the weight of the entire Indian batting unit for much of the 1990s and managed to prolong his career to 24 years.
This entailed him breaking many records, as Sachin scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests with 51 centuries and 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs with 49 centuries. He holds the record for being the first man to score 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Sachin is also the first man to play 200 Tests, score 100 international centuries, be the first male cricketer to score a double hundred in ODI cricket, have the most runs in ODIs and Tests, have the most matches played in both formats, and have numerous other records.
After six attempts at winning a World Cup, Tendulkar finally realized his dream when India became world champions for the second time in 2011.
He also played in the Indian Premier League after being named as an icon player of the Mumbai Indians. He captained the team to the final of the tournament in 2010, where he was named the MVP of the tournament. He won the IPL with the MI team in 2013 and then retired from all cricket the same year.
Tendulkar has been bestowed with numerous other awards and recognitions as well. He is the first cricketer and sportsperson to receive the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 2014. He was the Wisden cricketer of the year in 1997 and player of the tournament in the 2003 World Cup.
