Mohammad Shami is continuing to excel for Bengal in the 1st preliminary quarterfinal of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy (SMAT 2024). He has 8 wickets in 7 matches for Bengal thus far, but his recent exploit wasn’t with the cherry but with the bat.

Chandigarh captain Manan Vohra won the toss and chose to bowl first against Bengal at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Karan Lal made 33, Pradipta Pramanik scored 30 off 24 and Writtick Chatterjee made 28 runs as Chandigarh bowlers ran riot on the Bengal batting unit. Reeling at 114/8 in 16 overs, Bengal needed someone to go ballistic with the bat and give them an explosive finish.

And Mohammad Shami did just that. Shami's onslaught that had three fours and a couple of stunning sixes, came in the death overs as he took the Chandigarh bowlers to the cleaners.

Shami’s knock came at a stunning strike rate of 188.24 as he propelled Bengal to 159 for 9 from a precarious spot.

Chandigarh tried their best to chase the total. Raj Bawa top-scored with 32, while Pardeep Yadav (27), Manan Vohra (23), and Nikhil Sharma (22) also contributed to the chase. But the Bengal bowlers kept their cool and defended the total, as Chandigarh managed 156/9 in 20 overs.

Bengal won by 3 runs in the end, with Sayan Ghosh taking 4/30 and Kanishk Seth taking two wickets. Mohammad Shami also picked 1/25 in his four overs as Bengal qualified for the quarterfinals of the SMAT 2024.
