Yuvraj Singh can be heard telling Abhishek to take singles during training, but batter ignores him.
Yuvraj Singh, part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup win and 2011 ICC World Cup victory, has mentored Abhishek Sharma from a young age and the left-handed opener became a rage in 2024.
First, he showcased his pure-hitting class in IPL 2024 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Abhishek hit 484 runs in 16 matches at a staggering strike rate of over 200. He topped the six-hitting charts with 42 massive ones, four more than Virat Kohli and Heinrich Klaasen.
Then he made his India T20I debut in Zimbabwe and struck a stunning century in only his second match.
Yuvraj Singh shared a video of him guiding Abhishek Sharma in nets and urging him to take singles instead of hitting the big shots. "Single bhi le lo Maharaj," Yuvraj Singh can be heard telling Abhishek repeatedly.
"Tu Na Sudhri (You won't change)," Yuvraj can be heard saying in the video when Abhishek hits another one in the air.
Frustrated by his repeated attempts to make Abhishek understand the importance of taking singles, Yuvraj decided to convey this crucial advice through a public birthday message.
"Happy birthday sir Abhishek. Hope you take as many singles this year as many as you knock out of the park. Keep putting in the hard work! loads of love and wishes for a great year ahead!" Yuvraj wrote in his message on Wednesday.
Yuvraj has mentored several young Punjab cricketers, including Abhishek, Shubman Gill, Anmolpreet Singh, and Prabhsimran Singh. This mentorship began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Yuvraj invited the players to his home for a five-week training camp.
