Rodney Hogg had called the West Indies team pathetic and hopeless.
Set 216 to win, Australia could only managed 207 runs. Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 91, while Cameron Green with 42 and Mitchell Starc with 21 were the only batters to go past 20 after Smith. Travis Head recorded a king pair, getting out for a duck on the first ball in both innings.
Shamar Joseph was the chief destroyer with figures of 7/68 and eight wickets in the match. He was named the Player of the Match and Player of the Series as well, for 13 wickets in all in 2 Tests.
This was West Indies’ first Test win in Australia after 27 years and they handed Australia their first loss in a day-night Test.
During the post-match presentation, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite gave an apt reply to Rodney Hogg and even showed his biceps to represent his team’s strength.

“I must say we had two words that inspired us in this Test match, Mr. Rodney Hogg said that we were pathetic and hopeless. That was our inspiration. We wanted to show the world we're not pathetic. And I must ask him, are these muscles big enough for him (Shows his biceps),” Brathwaite said.
“I wanted to show the world what we’re made of. The doctor told me that Shamar could do it and I had to back him. He’s a superstar. I know he’ll do great things for the West Indies in the future. Just his belief is incredible, he told me that he won’t stop bowling till we win it. Very proud of the guys, they showed a lot of fire and heart, especially after the first Test. Very nice to see how they put in a fight, especially the batters. We can only learn from this win. I believe the more the better, that’s how we learn. I would love more Test cricket for sure,” he added.
This was the second loss at the Gabba in Tests for Australia since 1988-89. They had previously lost to India in 2021 and now West Indies has defeated them at a ground that is known as the ‘Fortress’.
