Cricket fraternity reacts as India women records first-ever Test victory over Australia; wins by 8 wickets in Mumbai

India women’s team created history as they defeated Australia women in the one-off Test in Mumbai on December 24, 2023, by 8 wickets. This was their first-ever win in Tests against Australia and second consecutive Test win this month, as they had previously defeated England women.

Australia women had won the toss and chosen to bat first. Thanks to 50 by Tahlia McGrath and 40 by Beth Mooney, they posted 219 runs in 1st innings. For India, Pooja Vastrakar took 4/53, while Sneh Rana took 3/56.

In response, India posted 406 runs with Smriti Mandhana (74), Jemimah Rodrigues (73, Deepti Sharma (78), Richa Ghosh (52) on Test debut, and Pooja Vastrakar (47) making big contributions. Ashleigh Gardner picked four wickets for Australia.

In the second innings, Australia did better, scoring 261 runs. Tahlia McGrath scored 73, her second fifty of the match. Ellyse Perry made 45, while Beth Mooney made 38 runs. Sneh Rana picked 4/63 for India and restricted Australia’s lead to just 74 runs.

Smriti Mandhana remained unbeaten on 38 and though India lost two wickets, they registered an easy 8-wicket win. Sneh Rana was given the Player of the Match for her 7 wickets in the encounter.

The cricket fraternity was all praiseful for the Indian women’s team’s brilliant and historic Test win over Australia and lauded them on social media.
