Labuschagne made 111 runs with 10 fours and 2 sixes to his name.
Thanks to 189 by Zak Crawley and half-centuries from Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and a 99* from Jonny Bairstow, England posted 592 in reply, taking a 275-run lead after first innings.
After Australia's openers were dismissed for insignificant scores, Marnus Labuschagne took charge and scored a brilliant 111 in 173 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes to his name, as wickets fell around him.
It took the part-time spin of Joe Root to dislodge the Australian No. 3 whose 103-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh had frustrated England on a rain-curtailed day. He nicked one from Joe Root to keeper Bairstow, who took a sharp catch.
The England players looked extremely confident and immediately called for review when the on-field umpire didn’t raise his finger. Ultra-edge showed a clear spike and the Manchester crowd started booing even as Labuschagne made his way back to the locker room.
