Three Nellai fielders failed to take a simple catch due to miscommunication.
The incident was so stunning and funny that the fans were reminded of the Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik video which is viral on social media whenever someone searches for the funniest drop catches in cricket.
During a 2008 ODI encounter in UAE between West Indies and Pakistan, Chris Gayle top-edged an Umar Gul delivery that went high in the air. Malik and Ajmal, stationed at mid-off and mid-on respectively, both went for the catch, but neither called for it resulting in the ball landing in between the two fielders.
The video went into circulation again, when a similar incident happened in the TNPL 2023 match when the Nellai fielders goofed up.
Dragons's Subodh Bhati top-edged a delivery from Kings pacer M Poiyamozhi and the ball flew towards the fine-leg fielder. Lakshay Jain was positioned at fine-leg and ideally, it was supposed to be his catch.
However, the wicket-keeper and the fielder at short third-man also decided to run backwards to complete the catch. This resulted in a massive miscommunication between the three fielders and they saw the ball drop between themselves.
