England ended day one on 68/3, still 195 runs behind Australia's 1st innings total of 263.
Alex Carey took a very good catch to remove Ben Duckett on day one of the ongoing Third Ashes 2023 Test at Headingley and in the process of making sure that the ball didn’t spill out of his gloves, used his mouth to good effect.
However, on commentary, former England captain Eoin Morgan’s remarks on Carey’s action went viral on social media.
Australia had been put into bat first by Ben Stokes, who won the toss and despite getting some early wickets, thanks to Mitchell Marsh’s 118 and Travis Head’s 39 and their 155-run partnership, the visitors posted 263 runs in their first innings.
For England, Mark Wood rattled Australians with his pace picking five wickets, while returning Chris Woakes took three wickets.
In response, England finished the day on 68/3 with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root retuning back unbeaten.
To hurt England, Australia captain Pat Cummins had other ideas as he struck twice in the final session to dismiss Ben Duckett and Harry Brook, who was promoted up the order in the absence of the injured Ollie Pope.

Cummins bowled a back-of-a-length delivery to Duckett, who got a thick edge which flew straight to Alex Carey, who dived to his left and took a very good catch.
With the ball seemingly popping out of his gloves, he used his mouth to keep the ball safe as he hit the ground and rolled to complete the catch. His effort drew an interesting comment from former England captain Eoin Morgan, who was on commentary duty.
"Oh, that's definitely a smooch. behave yourself, Alex Carey," Morgan was heard saying on-air.
For Australia, Pat Cummins picked two wickets, while Mitchell Marsh accounted for Zak Crawley, who had given England a good start with a knock of 33.
