Australia had won the Indore Test by 9 wickets with Nathan Lyon taking 11 wickets.
India had come into this Test match with a 2-0 lead in the series, but the Indore pitch offered turn and had a variable bounce from day one onwards. India had batted first and was bowled out for 109 runs with Matthew Kuhnemann taking a fifer.
Australia responded with 197, with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja sharing 7 wickets in between them.
In the second innings, Nathan Lyon ran through the Indian lineup with 8/64 bowling them out for 163. Then Australia chased the 76-run target with 9 wickets in hand and the match ended in seven sessions.
ICC Match Referee Chris Broad's assessment of the Indore pitch read: “The pitch, which was very dry, did not provide a balance between bat and ball, favoring spinners from the start."
And as a result, ICC initially rated the pitch ‘poor’, which was appealed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). ICC appeal panel consisting of Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket, and Roger Harper, ICC Men’s Cricket Committee Member, went through the footage and concluded that there was not enough excessive variable bounce to warrant the 'poor' rating.
The ICC then reviewed the footage before changing their verdict in the Indore pitch to ‘below average’.
This didn’t sit well with Australian media as Fox Cricket tweeted their news article on ICC's changed verdict with the summary: "India dished up a truly terrible pitch for the third Test against Australia, but they've managed to get the pitch rating upgraded from 'poor' after an appeal!"
And their headline read: “ICC's ridiculous backdown on pitch rating after Aus-India Test debacle.” However, their tweet saw a funny reaction from former Australia cricketer and coach Darren Lehmann who posted no words, but just three laughing emoticons.
Meanwhile, Indian fans were left livid at Fox Cricket's tweet on the big news, most of whom reminded them of the eventual result of the BGT series.
