Maharaj is looking at at least 6 months out of the game after injuring his Achilles tendon.
Maharaj was celebrating the wicket of West Indies’ Kyle Mayers as he trapped the middle batter in front of the wicket. The on-field gave it not out as the Proteas took the DRS to check it with the third umpire which worked in their favor.
However, the celebration turned into horror for Maharaj, as while he began running to celebrate the wicket, he seemingly hurt his left ankle and collapsed in agony while holding the said leg.
He lay on his stomach grimacing in pain as his teammates, who were all standing next to him in a huddle waiting for the review decision, tried to help before the medics arrived.
He was attended to by the team physio and was later stretchered off the field. Maharaj sustained a “complete rupture" of the tendon, Cricket South Africa said and will meet with a surgeon on Monday.

Meanwhile, reports stated that this injury might see Maharaj out of action for a minimum of six months and this puts his participation in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in doubt. Cricket South Africa shared a photo of Maharaj in a moon boot with crutches and wished him a speedy recovery.
