Eoin Morgan captained England for more than 7 years, winning the 2019 World Cup.
He was named captain of the England side ahead of the ICC World Cup in 2015 and despite poor performance in the tournament, transformed the team into one of the most feared units in limited-overs cricket.
Under his captaincy, England reached the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup and the semifinals of the 2021 edition of the tournament. However, the biggest achievement for Morgan as England captain was winning the ICC World Cup in 2019 at home, giving England their maiden 50-over title.
Morgan had expressed a desire to lead England in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022, however, in the last 18 months, his form with the bat and his fitness took a major hit.
He scored just one fifty in the last 48 innings in competitive cricket and with him missing multiple matches for England due to injuries, Morgan knew his time was up in international cricket.
In a video shared by England cricket, Morgan said, “Everything must come to an end. I have been open and honest the last three years about when this day would come. I have spoken to a lot of people that have been through this transition, particularly in our sport. Each one of them to a man said that there will be a time and place that it will just hit you like a ton of bricks or the answer I got and most common was ‘You’ll know'.
When we were in Amsterdam, it hit me quite hard. And, I am glad that I was in a good enough space to realize what I was going through and accept it. I was quite sad the day that it hit me but since then I have been very happy, very content, unbelievably proud not only as a player but as a captain.”
After his announcement of retirement, Eoin Morgan received a host of tribute messages from not only fans but also the cricket fraternity who took to Twitter to share their praises for the former England captain.
