A 41-year long wait for an Olympic medal in hockey came to an end on Thursday (August 5). Indian men's hockey team succeeded in securing the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics after beating Germany by 5-4.
India was 1-3 down in the match, but they recovered to take down Germany by 5-4 in a thriller. Germany was given a penalty corner in the last six seconds of the final quarter, but they failed to level the score.
India's last Olympic medal in Hockey came at the 1980 Moscow Games where they won the gold medal. They had not featured in the semifinals of the Olympics after the 1972 Munich Games where they lost 0-2 against Pakistan.

The Indian men’s hockey team has won eight gold medals, one silver, and three bronze medals. Indian cricket team reacted to the memorable win by the hockey team in Tokyo.
The wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant's tweet read, "Congratulations to the Men's #Hockey Team on clinching Bronze at #Tokyo2020. Truly a historic moment for the country after a wait of 41 long years. Congratulations to each and every player and staff! @TheHockeyIndia #TeamIndia #Olympics."
Off-spinner R Ashwin reacted to the success of India's hockey team and wrote, "What a day for Indian Hockey. So proud of the entire contingent and now fingers crossed for the Women. #IndianHockey".
India's senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who led the limited-overs side on recent Sri Lanka tour, congratulated the hockey team for the historic win. "History! Congratulations to our hockey team on creating history! An outstanding achievement that won’t be forgotten," his tweet read.
