Lovlina Borgohain lost her semi-final match but made India proud with her fighting spirit.
India's 23-year-old boxer Lovlina Borgohain lost in the semi-final of the women's welterweight category against Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli. Despite a defeat, Lovlina secured a bronze medal for India, thanks to her impressive performance earlier in the competition which took her to the semi-final.
Lovlina lost the match by a unanimous decision after losing all three rounds in the match. Her point was also deduced in the second round due to foul. It was India's third medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and all three came from women athletes.
Social media was buzzing with the congratulatory tweets for Lovlina for making India proud with her effort. Although the Turkey boxer dominated the match, Lovlina didn't give up and stayed in the fight till the very last minute like a true fighter.
India cricket great Sachin Tendulkar congratulated her and wrote that he hopes for an uphill journey from here. "Congratulations on winning #Bronze, @LovlinaBorgohai ! Terrific achievement to win a medal in your first ever #Olympics With your commitment and hard work, I am sure things will only get better from here. The entire nation is very proud of you. #Tokyo2020 #Boxing," he tweeted.
Ex-India batsman Virender Sehwag also lauded Lovlina for the achievement and wrote, "Brilliant Lovlina ! Just the third ever Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal. Congratulations #LovlinaBorgohain on winning the bronze."
