PM Modi and President Kovind pay tribute to India's 1983 WC hero Yashpal Sharma

Sharma passed away due to a cardiac arrest early on Tuesday morning.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with President of India Ramnath Kovind condoled the demise of former India cricketer Yashpal Sharma on Tuesday (July 13). The 1983 World Cup winner passed away due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 66 early on Tuesday morning.

Shri Yashpal Sharma Ji was a much beloved member of the Indian cricket team, including the legendary 1983 squad. He was an inspiration for teammates, fans as well as budding cricketers. Anguished by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi wrote on Twitter.

The right-hand batsman who played a key role in India’s 1983 World Cup victory, was also the highest run-getter of that tournament for India. Sharma who is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son was also an umpire and national selector.

The President of India, Ramnath Kovind also mourned the demise of the cricketer. In a condolence message, he also pointed out his contribution for Team India in 1983 World Cup that won India their maiden World Cup.

Former BCCI president and current sports minister Anurag Thakur hailed the former India cricketer for his exceptional contribution and an illustrious career while playing for India.
