The opening ODI between Sri Lanka and West Indies saw a bizarre incident in Antigua on Wednesday (March 10), as visiting opener Danushka Gunathilaka was declared out in the most unusual fashion.

During the 22nd over of Sri Lanka’s innings, Gunathilaka took a couple of steps out to take a single but changed his mind midway.

In his attempt to get back to the crease, Gunathilaka deflected the ball away from West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard’s reach with the underside of his foot.

While it seemed unintentional from the batsman, Pollard appealed right away and the soft signal was OUT for obstructing the field.

After seeing the replay, third umpire upheld the on-field call as Gunathilaka had to walk back to the pavilion for 55 off 61 deliveries.

Twitter was ablaze after Danushka Gunathilaka was given out by the third umpire. Cricket experts felt the Sri Lankan opener was hard done by the umpires and fielding team.

Chasing 233 to win, the hosts rode on Shai Hope’s 133-ball 110 to overhaul the target with 18 balls to spare. Evin Lewis also played a valuable knock of 65 from 90 deliveries.
