IPL 2021: NZ players continuously overlooked in IPL auctions for 'second rate Australians' - Simon Doull

Simon Doull has criticized IPL franchisees for preferring Australians over Kiwi players.

By Sameer Deodhar - 23 Feb, 2021

India off-spinner R Ashwin's tweet regarding Kiwi batsman Devon Conway's brilliant T20I knock just 4 days after the auction sparked a sensational tweet from New Zealand's cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull.

New Zealand's Devon Conway remained unbeaten on 99 in the first T20I of the five-match series against Australia in Christchurch which was played on February 22, just 4 days after the IPL 2021 auction. Conway had gone unsold in the auction.

Hence, Indian bowling all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin had posted a tweet praising the left-hander but said that the knock had come just 4 days late.

Devon Conway is just 4 days late, but what a knock ???????????? #AUSvNZ

Doull replied to the tweet saying that even if he had scored the knock before the auction, it would have hardly mattered as the IPL franchise tend to go for 'second rate Australians' rather than New Zealand players.

NZ v AUS 2021: "Just 4 days late," R Ashwin praises Devon Conway's 99-run knock while referring to IPL auction

He wrote, "Not sure it matters @ashwinravi99 NZ players have continually been overlooked for second rate Australians in the IPL for years. Seems outside of IPL big bash is the only comp looked at.. #player #NZcricket"

This tweet made fans point fingers at the Australian players who were picked in the IPL 2021 auction to decide who among those were 'the second rate'. As a result, Simon Doull posted another tweet asking them to stop trolling and gave out numbers for facts.

He revealed that 94 Australians have been picked by IPL franchises since its inception for a total of Rs. 886 crores while only 31 New Zealand players have been picked with the total amounting to Rs 212 crores.

Just some context. I did not mention any names so stop trolling.
Since IPL started 94 Aussies at combined 886 Crore.
31 NZ players 212 Crore. Both countries have 6 first class teams and both have domestic T20 comps. It’s more about timing and viewing of BBL. #balance #scouting
