England had defeated Australia by 2-1 in the 2005 Ashes at home.
Cricket fans had witnessed a gripping contest between bat and ball during that series, in which hosts England defeated arch-rivals Australia by 2-1 to clinch the urn for the first time since 1987.
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, who featured in a number of close Test series during his illustrious career, on Tuesday (July 21) termed 2005 Ashes as the best he ever played in.

Recalling the 2005 Ashes on its 15th anniversary, Ponting tweeted: “Ashes cricket the way it should be played, two teams not willing to give an inch. The start of the best Test series I ever played in.”
Notably, Ponting led Australia in the 2005 Ashes in UK. While the visitors started the series with a thumping 239-run win at Lord’s, they suffered two heart-wrenching defeats by 2 runs and 3 wickets at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge respectively to concede the prestigious urn.
Ponting was the second highest run-getter for his side in the 2005 Ashes with 359 runs from five Tests, including a match-saving century (156) at Old Trafford.
