On Tuesday (June 2), the official handle of BCCI posted a clip on Twitter in which Shami can be seen distributing food packets and masks to migrant workers who are travelling to their hometowns by road.

The fast bowler has also set up a food distribution stall outside his residence in Sahaspur.

"As #IndiaFightsCorona, @MdShami11 comes forward to help people trying to reach home by distributing food packets & masks on National Highway No. 24 in Uttar Pradesh. He has also set up food distribution centres near his house in Sahaspur. We are in this together," the BCCI captioned the video.

The Coronavirus-induced lockdown has led to a migrant refugee crisis in India as lakhs of people trying to walk back home battling extreme heat and hunger.

Earlier, Shami had shared an incident of migrant labourer being left unconscious because of hunger at his doorstep.

“He was coming from Rajasthan. Just imagine he is supposed to go to Bihar which is so far from Lucknow too. He has no means to commute and I saw in my home CCTV camera that he fainted in hunger and was close to my door. So I provided him with food and helped him out,” Shami had said while speaking with India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on Instagram Live.

“I am trying to help as much as I can. There are migrant workers here who are really struggling to meet ends. The highway is also near my house so I can see people having a tough time. I feel I should help and I am doing as much as possible,” he added.

The world has come to a virtual standstill with the Coronavirus outbreak spreading across continents.

As of June 2, the pandemic has claimed more than 377,000 lives and infected over 6,300,000 people globally.

In India, around 1,99,000 confirmed cases have been reported thus far while 5600 people have lost their lives.
