Bhogle removed the word Nizamuddins from his tweet and changed it.
The Hazrat Nizamuddin area of Delhi saw one of the largest congregation of people as the members of the Tabalighi Jamat met and this has led to one of the biggest spreads in India of the deadly Coronavirus.
Around 3,400 came together for a religious gathering at the Nizamuddin Markaz on March 13. This despite orders from the Delhi government which said that no religious or social gathering could take place with more than 200 people. The officials have searched thousands of people, including the foreigners, who attended the gathering and then went to their respective states, after some of them in the gathering were tested positive for the Coronavirus.
The whole of India has been under lockdown since March 24 with only essential services being allowed to operate. Despite such circumstances, this highly irresponsible meet has resulted in many people testing positive for the COVID-19.
When reports last came in, more than 100 attendees, including 50 in Tamil Nadu, 24 in Delhi, 18 in Kashmir, 15 fresh in Telangana and nine in Andaman and Nicobar had tested positive for the disease.
Eminent cricket journalist Harsha Bhogle had taken to Twitter in order to express his views on this incident. He tweeted, “For the next few weeks, let us make our larger community and its welfare the only thing to adhere to. If we prevent this virus from multiplying, it will make us so much stronger. We cannot afford more Nizamuddins,” he wrote in his tweet.
The statement, ‘We cannot afford more Nizamuddins’ definitely meant that the people should avoid such gatherings in the near future. However, Bhogle deleted his tweet and replaced ‘Nizamuddins’ with ‘them’ only to face the wrath for the same.
However, this change meant that many of the Twitter users were not happy with Bhogle deleting his tweet where he had pointed at one certain event and then generalizing that his only intention was to highlight that everyone should avoid mass gatherings.
The Twitterverse lashed out at him for his clarification and here are some tweets for you.
