The four men who raped and murdered a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi in 2012, were finally hanged in the Tihar Jail on March 20, 2020. The four convicts Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) had exhausted all of their legal remedies despite the best efforts of their lawyer.

All of them were convicted in 2013, but it took 7 years of legal procedures for them to be brought to final justice. Another accused Mohammad Afroz was released from jail after serving his time as he was a juvenile. While, another Ram Singh, committed suicide in the jail itself.

Before the execution, Tihar jail was completely locked down. Paramilitary forces were deployed outside the jail to subdue the crowd. Security was beefed up outside Tihar Jail Number 3. The Supreme Court had a hearing at 2:30 am, which proved to be the final nail in their coffin.

"Vinay and Mukesh had their dinner properly on time. The meal comprised roti, dal, rice, and sabzi. Akshay had tea in the evening but did not have dinner. All the four convicts did not have breakfast," Tihar jail official said.

Nirbhaya’s mother said, "Der se hi sahi par insaaf mila (delayed though, but we got justice)."

The whole country celebrated when the accused were hanged despite the best efforts to exploit the legal loopholes. The Indian cricket fraternity also reacted to the verdict and execution of the accused on Twitter.
