MS Dhoni scolded Deepak Chahar for his poor bowling in CSK v RCB game in IPL 2019.
Chahar had been part of the CSK franchise from 2018 to 2024 before joining the Mumbai Indians franchise in IPL 2025.
Chahar spoke about CSK’s match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during IPL 2019. The Chennai Super Kings set a goal of 160 runs for three wickets in their 20 overs. Sarfaraz Khan batted brilliantly and scored 67 runs off 59 balls, including four fours and two sixes.
Chahar was bowling in the death overs for the first time, having previously only appeared as a new ball bowler for CSK. MS Dhoni assigned him this duty after serious consideration.
"In that game, for the very first time, I was bowling at the death. Before that, I had the responsibility of bowling with the new ball. So, after lots of consideration, Mahi Bhai threw me the ball in the death, and Sarfaraz was the batter. In the preparation, we discussed the type of deliveries we need to bowl to a certain batter. The plan was to bowl a slow delivery, and I went with a leg cutter," Chahar said on Big Boss.
“Now, my feet stopped on the first ball, and it went full toss. So, he smashed a four, and it ended up being a no-ball. The plan was right, but the execution was wrong. So, I repeated the same ball, and it was again a no-ball. Eight runs came without a ball being bowled. Now, Mahi Bhai came furiously and said something to me.
Mahi Bhai said that 'you are not dumb; I am the one who trusted you.' I thought that this was the last time I got the chance to bowl in the death overs. In the same five balls, I gave away five runs and picked up a wicket. We won the game at the end,” Chahar added.

Despite this incident, CSK went on to win the match by 22 runs. Chahar had an impressive season in 2019. He finished as the third-highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets.
