The future of the chief of the BCCI selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, is set to be decided by the board office-bearers, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed on September 18, 2026, after attending the Annual General Meeting on Friday.

Ajit Agarkar, who was appointed chairman of selectors in July 2023, is believed to have a contract that runs until October 2026. During his tenure, the Indian team reached the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 and also won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and 2026 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

However, the Indian team fared poorly in Test cricket, with a home series whitewash against New Zealand and South Africa and failure to reach the final of the WTC 2025.

Agarkar's continuation in the role has been the subject of speculation, despite the efforts of the BCCI to downplay his absence from the review meeting held recently to assess the performance of the Indian team on the tour of the United Kingdom.

Questions about his position have arisen due to the Rohit Sharma issue before the match against England at Lord's, where the selectors allegedly told him that he was no longer part of their plans.

However, the recent selection meeting to choose the Indian squad for the West Indies series, the Irani Cup and the India A teams went ahead without any disruptions under Ajit Agarkar’s supervision.

The General Body has authorised the BCCI office-bearers to take a call on the chief selector,vice-president Rajeev Shukla said after the BCCI AGM

Rajeev Shukla also confirmed that Arun Dhumal will continue as IPL governing chairman.

A latest report from Times of India stated that former India cricketers Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha were front-runners to take up the role of BCCI chief selector. If Agarkar is to leave, then the recent squad selection for the West Indies series was his last selection meeting.
