England and New Zealand are clashing in the second Test of the three-match series at the Oval. The match started on June 17 and saw England stand-in captain Joe Root win the toss and choose to bowl first.

Though New Zealand's top-order got starts, they failed to convert them into big scores. Tom Latham (27), Henry Nicholls (24), and Rachin Ravindra (33) all got starts. However, some counterattack came from Daryl Mitchell (44) and Tom Blundell (51), before Glenn Phillips held the tail together with 49* as New Zealand ended day one on 291/7.

Batting with sunglasses on, Phillips was subjected to some proper examination of pace by Jofra Archer, as he faced bouncer after bouncer. He dodged a few bouncers and also got hit by a few, but stood strong.

Phillips tried to avoid getting hit by another bouncer by Archer and was flat on the ground, where he breathed heavily and then cheekily showed a thumbs-up to Archer to appreciate his pace and fiery bowling.

Archer continued to be the major attraction, making the New Zealand middle order uncomfortable with his speed and aggression, and making sure the visitors had little rest.
