Virat Kohli had played 559 international matches for India.
Jonty Rhodes pointed out a significant flaw in Virat Kohli's aggressiveness and style of play. He believed that although Kohli is an excellent fielder, he is not the best that India has ever produced. When things are not going well for the team as a whole, Rhodes thinks that being too aggressive can be a problem.
"It was so different from MS, from a captaincy point of view. But it's consistent. Virat Kohli, when he bats, when he's in the field, when he's captain—that is what he does. When I am watching him as a fielding coach, I watch him. He's not the best fielder in India, but he's a great fielder. His energy is incredible. My only concern is that when he is overly aggressive, it's great when everything is going well. But if things aren't going well for the team, where does that aggression go? It's too easy, then, to come out in a dressing room environment," he said during a conversation on Prakhar Gupta's YouTube channel.
Rhodes added that although Kohli is a fantastic generational player, he only has trouble in England's swinging conditions. But practically every batter would struggle when the ball swung, he said.
"As a generational player, I think the only thing he struggled with was the swing in England. But he's human. All of us struggle when the ball swings,” Rhodes added.
Jonty Rhodes was also questioned on what he thought of the analogy between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. The South African believed that in terms of records, Kohli might surpass Tendulkar. But he claimed that comparing the two generational stars was pointless.
"There is so much cricket. He's not getting downtime. I know he's playing only franchise cricket in India. But there's not a lot of downtime. His body is stronger, and mentally and physically, he's in such great shape that he could be better than Tendulkar from a records point of view. I could ask the question a lot. Who's better? But why are you even trying to compare them? Isn't it amazing that India has produced these two most amazing generational batters? Straight after each other," he said.
Rhodes continued by saying that rather than drawing comparisons between India's two legendary batters, it is time to celebrate their success. He thought it was fantastic that India didn't have to wait long to have two outstanding players.
"The fact that it wasn't a ten-year gap—that India had this great player and ten years later somebody. Not just their contribution with the bat, but their contribution to the inspiration of that generation. It should be celebrated rather than compared. One country has these two players who, between them, have inspired billions. Incredibly, these two have overlapped," he expressed.
Sachin Tendulkar has the most runs by any batter across formats. He, in 664 international matches, amassed 34357 runs at an average of 48.52 with 100 centuries and 164 half-centuries.
On the other hand, Kohli has scored 28215 runs at an average of 52.73 with 85 hundreds and 146 fifties in 559 international games.
