SL v IND 2021: Sri Lanka team fined 20% of their match fees for slow over-rate in 2nd ODI

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (July 22) announced that the Sri Lanka team was fined for a slow over-rate against India in the recent second ODI of the ongoing three-match ODI series at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday (July 20).

Sri Lanka has been fined 20 percent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in the defeated second ODI against India after the hosts were ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration on Tuesday in Colombo.

Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after the on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena, Lyndon Hannibal, the third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella leveled the charge against Sri Lanka.

Apart from the fine, Sri Lanka will lose one point from their points tally during the ICC World Cup Super League for the slow over-rate in the second ODI against India.

According to the Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.12.2 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over short, resulting in, Sri Lanka will lose one point.

Meanwhile, the ICC stated that the Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
