SA v IND 2021-22: Hoping Siraj will come out and give his best - R Ashwin

Siraj hurt his hamstring in his fourth over on Day 1.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was hopeful of fast bowler Mohammed Siraj taking the field again on the second day after hurting his hamstring on Monday (January 3) at Wanderers, Johannesburg.

Siraj, bowled an outstanding spell in particular to South African captain Dean Elgar, who needed quite a bit of fortune to not lose his wicket. He sent down 3.5 overs and was about to bowl his final ball of the day when he pulled up in his delivery stride. Shardul Thakur eventually completed the over after the fast bowler hobbled off the ground with physio Nitin Patel.

"The medical staff are assessing him overnight and obviously it is very immediate. So initially what they do with these injures is just ice and they see for the next hour or two and I'm hoping with the history that Siraj has, he will definitely come out and give his best," said Ashwin during his virtual press conference after the day's play.

South Africa were 35/1 in reply to India's moderate first innings total of 202 at stumps. The visitors will hope Siraj's injury isn't as serious as it looked at the time and he would be able to take the field.
