IRE v IND 2026: “We fell short of…,” Shreyas Iyer dissects India’s shortcomings after 0-2 loss to Ireland in T20I series

Ireland scripted a historic 2-0 T20I series whitewash against India at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on Sunday (June 28), marking a monumental upset months after the Men in Blue successfully defended their T20 World Cup title at home.

Invited to bat first, Ireland recovered to post a total of 154/8, with Harry Tector anchoring the innings with a vital 53 off 47 balls.

India's reply started poorly with early batting setbacks, putting immense pressure on the middle order. Vice-captain Tilak Varma fought back valiantly with a top score of 55 off 46 balls.

With 20 runs needed off the final over, the game went down to the wire. Despite Prince Yadav hitting a spectacular six off the final delivery, India finished agonizingly short at 153/9, handing Ireland a 1-run.

This shocking result officially ended India’s 16-series unbeaten streak in bilateral T20Is—their first series loss since falling to the West Indies in August 2023. It also marked a rough start to Shreyas Iyer's tenure as full-time T20I captain.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Shreyas minced no words, conceding that the hosts outplayed them in analysing how the conditions would play out.

“It’s definitely not a great series, honestly speaking, but kudos to them, the way they played. Ireland team, I think they showed the professionalism and definitely had a tremendous idea about how the wicket was going to play and the field work there was phenomenal. So a comprehensive win to them and congratulations,” Iyer said.

“I feel the bowlers, they were phenomenal in terms of their executions today. But we fell a bit short in our batting. We were, we fell a bit short in terms of analyzing how the wicket is going to play and also converting singles into twos. I think they definitely outplayed us in that department,” he added.

India handed debut caps to right-arm pacer Prince Yadav and batting all-rounder Suryansh Shedge in the second T20I. Prince made an instant impact, returning with the figures of 3 for 22 in four overs. On the other hand, Shedge had a tough outing, leaving 25 runs in his two overs and scoring only 1 off 5 balls during the chase.

The Indian skipper praised both debutants. “Definitely, as I mentioned earlier, that he’s (Prince) got great experience in the IPL and he carries that momentum over here as well. He has his own set of ideas and plans when it comes down to the ball. But the attitude and approach which he had and also Suryansh, I mean it was his first game, but yeah, he will definitely learn from this,” Iyer remarked.

Shreyas Iyer signed off with a polite and gracious message for Ireland cricket. “Thank you so much. It’s an honor and a pleasure to be here,” he concluded.

The India team must now quickly regroup under coach Gautam Gambhir as they prepare for a five-match T20I tour of England, starting July 1 in Chester-le-Street.
