Gill was deemed not out on umpire's call on LBW DRS.
India opted to go with three pure pacers in Umran Malik, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammad Shami, and Yuzvendra Chahal and Akshar Patel being the two spinners with Hardik Pandya as the all-rounder.
Rohit Sharma had Shubman Gill as his opening partner and the duo went after the Sri Lankan bowlers from the start and added 100 in 14.5 overs itself. Gill played amazingly well and was hovering around the 100 strike rate.
But there was a moment where Dunith Wellalage almost got him LBW in the 17th over. On the penultimate ball of the over, Wellalage tossed one up and Gill stretched fully to defend it properly. The ball didn’t turn and hit Gill flush on the pad. It was a flatter delivery around off and Shubman Gill got beaten on his defense.
After having a chat with the keeper, skipper Shanaka took DRS and reviews showed that the ball had hit the pad first and not the bat. However, the impact of the ball on the pad came out on the umpire’s call, and as the on-field umpire had given it not out. The ball was crashing into the stumps, but he was saved due to the impact call.
