India won by an innings and 222 runs to go 1-0 up.
India recorded its fifth-largest win in Test cricket after defeating Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first Test in Mohali. Indian captain Rohit Sharma enforced the follow-on before wrapping up the win shortly before the closing time on the third day.
Sri Lanka resumed their first innings at 108/4, and except Pathum Nissanka (61*) none of their batters could defy the relentless Indian attack for too long as the visitors were bowled out for 174 and conceded a lead of 400 runs and chose to enforce the follow-on.
Ravindra Jadeja (5/41) finished with his 10th five-wicket haul, becoming only the sixth cricketer to score 150+ and take a five-wicket haul in an innings of the same Test. R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each, while Mohammad Shami picked up one.
Batting again after being asked to follow on, the story repeated as Sri Lanka folded for 178 with wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella scoring a valianf 51*. Jadeja and Ashwin grabbed four wickets each, while Shami took two in the second innings as India completed an easy win.
It was a landmark Test for India with Virat Kohli playing his 100th Test, Rohit Sharma leading for the first time in Tests, R Ashwin going past Kapil Dev's tally of wickets and ofcourse Ravindra Jadeja putting up one of the great all-round performances.
The cricket fraternity applauded the performance of the Rohit Sharma-led team and hailed Jadeja's magnificent efforts with bat and ball.
