India was dethroned from no.1 ranking after five years in 2020.
Chasing 540 runs to win, New Zealand folded for 167 runs on day four morning with Indian spinner Jayant Yadav picking 4 wickets. This proved to be India’s biggest win in terms of runs and it also helped the Virat Kohli-led side attain the no.1 spot in the ICC Test team rankings.
India had reigned at the top for five years before being dethroned by Australia in 2020 for a short while and then again earlier this year by New Zealand, who beat England 1-0 in June and then beat India in the World Test Championship final.
The Virat Kohli and co. have done well since, defeating England in two Tests in the suspended series which they lead 2-1 with one Test left. With this big win in Mumbai, they were back to the top of the pack with 124 points, while New Zealand slid to the no.2 spot with 121 points to their name.
Australia with 108 and England with 107 points are on 3rd and 4th spot respectively and will clash in the five-Test Ashes 2021-22 series starting with the first match in Brisbane on December 8th.
