This was India's biggest win in terms of runs in Test cricket.
New Zealand’s stand-in captain Tom Latham admitted his team’s disappointing performance while crediting India the way they played after the tourists suffered a 372-run loss in the second and final Test on Monday (December 6) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Chasing 540 for victory, New Zealand were bowled out for just 167, thanks to Jayant Yadav's four-wicket haul in the second innings on the morning of the 4th day, as the Indian cricket team registered their highest runs – 372 victory in Tests.
The Kiwis were all out for a score total as low as 62 in the first innings in Mumbai.
With the massive win in the second Test, India won the two-match Test series 1-0 against New Zealand after the first Test in Kanpur ended in a draw.
Latham told host broadcaster Star Sports at the post-match presentation: “A disappointing performance. Credit to India, and 62 all-out would have set us back always. You always want to bat first here, and it only gets worse for batting here, and it wasn't how we wanted it to pan out.”
However, it was a memorable Test for Ajaz Patel, as he took a ten-wicket haul in the first innings to become the third bowler in the history of the game after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble to achieve the feat.
He also snared four wickets in the second innings against India in Mumbai, finishing with figures of 14/225 in the match.
He signed off by saying, “Guys are able to step up in different conditions and we have managed to get a lot of depth. Very special game for Ajaz, only the third time in the history of the game has a man got all ten. We're going to play Bangladesh after we get back home and we're going to start preparing for that series ASAP.”
