Shreyas Iyer is having a dream Test debut in the ongoing first match against New Zealand in Kanpur. Iyer, who got his Test cap from legend Sunil Gavaskar, was included in the XI after KL Rahul suffered a muscle strain and was ruled out of the two-Test series.

Iyer made the most of the chance he got in the whites and celebrated his debut with a very good 105 in the first innings. India was in a spot of bother at 145/4 when Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja added 121 runs for the 5th wicket. Iyer hit 2 sixes and 13 fours in his knock, helping India to 345 runs.

After gaining a crucial 49-run lead by bowling New Zealand out for 296 runs, India found themselves in a huge bother at 51/5 in the second innings, when Iyer and R Ashwin came together and steadied the ship a bit with a 52-run stand for the 6th wicket.

Iyer continued and added a further 64 runs with Wriddhiman Saha and in the process made 65 runs with 8 fours and 1 six. He became the first Indian batter to score a century and a fifty in his debut Test.

The cricket fraternity was all praises for the Mumbai batter and a few even called for his retention in the playing XI for the second Test in Mumbai.
