Shreyas Iyer became the 16th Indian batter to make a hundred on Test debut.
India's batter Shreyas Iyer on Friday (November 26) scored a hundred in his debut Test match against New Zealand. He became the 16th Indian batter to make a hundred on his Test debut.
Iyer, who was included in the side after KL Rahul's injury, took time to get comfortable in the crease before adding runs on Day 1 of the Kanpur Test. He made the opportunity count and ended up scoring 105 off 171 balls before Tim Southee dismissed him on Day 2.
India's Test captain Virat Kohli, who isn't playing the first Test, lauded Iyer for a memorable knock on debut. He posted an Instagram story praising the Mumbai batter and wrote, "Well played and congratulations @shreyas41 for the century on your debut".
Kohli will join the team in the second Test at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, and the team is currently led by Ajinkya Rahane.
Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar was also happy to see Iyer getting off to a good start in Test cricket. "Great start to your Test career, @ShreyasIyer15. Nice to see you as a part of #TeamIndia in ‘whites’. Good luck!", he wrote in his tweet.
Among some of the prominent names to have scored a hundred on Test debut are Mohammed Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Shikhar Dhawan.
