He delivered a stunning performance by notching up a crucial half-century to help India win the first ODI by 5 wickets against Australia on Friday, September 22.
This knock brought a collective sigh of relief among the Indian cricket team's management, who constantly supported Suryakumar and backed his selection in the team for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, despite his previous lackluster performances in the 50-over format.
Suryakumar’s fifty in the first ODI was more than just a milestone; it was a testament to his determination and talent. Suryakumar Yadav told broadcasters Sports18 after the match: “I was dreaming of this type of innings when I started playing this format. Trying to bat deep and finishing the game, unfortunately couldn’t do it today but very happy with the result.”
Speaking about the changes he made in his game, Yadav said: “I’d been wondering what had been happening for me in this format, the teams and bowlers were the same. I went back and reflected and realized I was probably rushing things a bit so I decided to play slower and take it deep.”
He signed off by saying on playing straight drives against Australia, “I think it’s the first time I haven’t played a sweep. This has come from the Chandu Pandit school of arts (on his straight drives).”
