Mohammad Shami will miss the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia after testing positive for COVID-19. The fast bowler has not joined the Indian team in Chandigarh as rest of the team members arrived on Saturday (September 17).

As per a report in Cricbuzz, Shami is definitely ruled out of the Australia T20Is from September 20-25, while his participation in the T20I series against South Africa, starting on September 28, will now depend on his recovery from the virus.

Shami was set to make his comeback in the T20I side for the first time since last year's T20 World Cup and he is also named as a standby for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

There was a lot of uproar by fans and former Indian cricketers when he was not picked by the national selectors despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022 in UAE. India's pace attack appeared quite toothless in absence of the pace trio.

The latest setback will be disappointing for the experienced seamer but he is still on course to travel with the Indian team to Australia along with the other traveling reserves Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar and Ravi Bishnoi, as reported by Cricbuzz.
