England and India clashed in the first ODI of the three-match series that was scheduled on July 14, 2026, at Edgbaston in Birmingham. England came into this series with a 4-0 T20I series win over India, while the Men in Blue were looking for redemption.

England captain Harry Brook won the toss and chose to bat first. Ben Duckett looked good for his 43 in 45 balls, but Indian bowlers ruled the roost for the first half of the innings. Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah reduced England to 107/6 in 21.4 overs.

However, Joe Root anchored one end and got support from Liam Dawson, as they added 121 runs for the 7th wicket. Root made 76* with 6 fours and one six, while Dawson made his maiden ODI fifty, scoring 68 runs with 6 fours and one six, as England made 258 runs in 47.5 overs.

For India, Axar Patel starred with 4/62, while Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar took two wickets each.

Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (5) fell early, but Shubman Gill, the captain, and Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain, added 101 runs for the third wicket to lay a strong foundation for the chase. Shubman Gill made 80 with 11 fours and one six before he had to retire hurt due to a hamstring injury.

Iyer made 35 runs before he was dismissed via run-out, and KL Rahul fell for one run. India looked a bit in trouble at 160/4, but then Washington Sundar and Axar Patel came together to add 102* runs for the 5th wicket to take India home without any further damage.

Patel made 57* and Sundar reached his fifty with a six, scoring 52* as India achieved the target in the 46th over. India won the game by 6 wickets to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Axar Patel won the Player of the Match for his unbeaten fifty and four-wicket haul.

The Indian cricket fraternity was all praise for a fine performance by the Indian team and its players and lauded them on social media.
