The reigning T20 world champions are searching for their first victory under new captain Shreyas Iyer.
Team India are still searching for their first T20I victory under new captain Shreyas Iyer. The Men in Blue kicked off the ongoing UK tour with a humiliating 0-2 series defeat to Ireland.
The performance went downhill in England, with India failing to register a win after four outings in the five-T20I series so far.
While the series opener against England ended in a frustrating no-result due to rain, India were outclassed in the second and third T20Is by four wickets and 125 runs, respectively.
On Thursday (July 9), the reigning T20 world champions suffered a nine-wicket thrashing in Bristol to concede an unassailable 0-3 lead to England in the series.
Amid the debacle, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has admitted the board is "deeply concerned" by the team's slump and will conduct a review of their dismal show after the England series.
"We are deeply concerned about the Indian team's performance, and once this series is over we will definitely have a review with the captain and coach to understand what is going wrong and will rectify the problems soon so we can regain our stature," Saikia told India Today.
India’s long-held No.1 ranking in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings is on the brink of being surrendered following a dismal run of form. Any further loss will see them forfeit the coveted position, which they have occupied since February 2022.
Speaking after the fourth T20I, Shreyas Iyer said the current Indian side was in a "transition phase" and mistakes were to be expected as several youngsters continue to adapt to overseas conditions.
“See, this is the transition phase and we will be making lot of mistakes. You see a lot of youngsters playing here in these conditions for the first time. So mistakes will definitely make them realize how important it is to adapt and have that awareness when you come in the overseas conditions,” Iyer quoted at the post-match presentation.
“Certainly. It's important that you learn quickly from your mistakes so that the team also benefits eventually out of it. And I'm sure that there are quick learners in the team. I'm sure they will assess themselves and get back stronger in the next game,” he further remarked.
The inconsequential fifth and final T20I will take place in Southampton on Saturday (July 11).
