Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Monday (18th July) said that if he gets 20 minutes with Virat Kohli, he will be able to help him. He believes that everyone needs to be patient with the right-hander and give him some time.

Kohli has been going through a dry spell with the bat for a while now. Having scored his last international ton in 2019, his struggle for runs has become dire, to say the least of late, as the half-centuries have also dried up.

After his poor outings in the one-off Test and T20I series, the 33-year-old yet again was dismissed for low scores in the second and third ODI, which is considered his strongest format. Notably, he missed the first ODI due to a groin injury.

Kohli, who used to make headlines almost every day with his heroics, is now receiving a lot of flak and many have even started to question his place in the Indian side.

Kohli looked good in both the matches and raised the excitement but got out in a similar manner in two games as he chased a good length delivery wide of off-stump, registering the scores of 16 and 17 respectively.

Speaking to India today, Sunil Gavaskar said that if he would spend 20 minutes with Kohli, he will share some things with him which might help the former Indian skipper to return back to form.

"If I had about 20 minutes with him, I would be able to tell him the things he might have to do. It might help him, I am not saying it will help him but it could, particularly with regards to that off-stump line

"Having been an opening batter, having been troubled by that line, there are certain things that you try and do. If I get 20 minutes with him, I might be able to tell him. It goes back to the fact that his first mistake turns out to be his last,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“Again, just because he is not amongst the runs, there is this anxiety to play at every delivery because that is what batters feel, they have got to score. You look to play at deliveries that you otherwise won't. But he has gotten out to good deliveries as well on this particular tour," he said.

Gavaskar said that India needs to be patient with Kohli as he has served Indian cricket for a long time and is allowed a few failures.

"Let's be patient, let's not rush things. We, somehow in India, hurry once a player reaches 32, 33, we all the time, look to push him out of the team when they have so much more to contribute. Let's be patient with Kohli as well. All these greats who have served Indian cricket are allowed a few failures,” he said.

Kohli has been rested from the upcoming ODI and T20I series against West Indies, beginning July 22.
